Ivan Aivazovsky

Ivan Aivazovsky (1817–1900) painted water better than almost
anyone — six thousand canvases of storms, moonlight and translucent waves that
appear to be lit from inside. Large formats do these justice; the transparency
he was famous for needs room to show itself.
