Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902) painted the American West at the scale it deserved — Yosemite valleys, Rocky Mountain passes and Sierra Nevada light pouring through storm cloud. A Hudson River School painter with a taste for the theatrical, his landscapes were the first images many Americans ever saw of their own frontier. Best hung large; these compositions lose their point at small sizes.
