Canvas vs Poster vs Framed Print: Which Is Right for Your Wall?
6 min de lectureDans cet article
The same image can arrive at your door as a paper poster, a framed print behind glass or a stretched canvas, and the three will look, feel and age very differently. None of them is wrong. Each suits a particular wall, budget and expectation, and knowing the trade-offs is the difference between a purchase you enjoy for years and one you quietly replace.
We make canvas, so we have a point of view, but we also frame rolled prints at home and pin posters up in the workshop. Here is an honest comparison.
What each one actually is
Poster
A poster is an image printed on paper, usually 150 to 250 gsm, often with a satin or gloss coating. It is sold flat or rolled and hung with pins, clips, tape or a slim frame. Most mass-market posters are printed with dye-based inks on an offset press.
Framed print
A framed print is also paper, usually heavier fine-art paper, mounted behind glass or acrylic in a wooden or metal frame. Often there is a mat board between the image and the glass, which adds a border and keeps the paper off the glazing. Quality varies enormously, from a budget frame with a thin print to a museum-grade piece with archival paper and UV-filtering glass.
Canvas print
A canvas print is an image printed directly onto artist canvas, then stretched over a wooden frame called a stretcher. Our canvas is a 380 gsm poly-cotton blend printed with archival pigment inks and stretched over kiln-dried pine bars. It can be left as a gallery wrap with the image continuing around the edges, or placed in a floating or wooden frame. There is no glass.
Materials and how they age
Longevity comes down to two things: what the image is printed on and what it is printed with.
- Paper is the most vulnerable surface. It yellows if it contains acid, absorbs humidity, and creases permanently. Good fine-art paper solves the acid problem; glass solves the handling problem; nothing solves the fact that a poster taped to a wall will curl within a season.
- Canvas is a woven textile. It does not crease, tolerates small knocks and, stretched under tension, stays flat for decades. It is not glass-protected, so it collects dust and should be kept away from steam and liquids.
- Dye inks, common in posters, are vivid but fade noticeably in direct light over a few years.
- Pigment inks, used in fine-art prints and in our canvases, are far more light-stable. Fading over a normal lifetime indoors is minimal.
Put simply: a poster is a two-to-five-year object, a well-framed pigment print on archival paper is a lifetime object, and a canvas print with pigment inks is a lifetime object with fewer failure points because there is no paper to buckle and no glass to break.
Glare, texture and how the image reads
This is the difference people notice first and think about least before buying.
Glass reflects. A framed print opposite a window or under a ceiling light shows the room as much as the artwork. Anti-reflective glass helps but costs more; acrylic is lighter but scratches easily.
Canvas absorbs. With no glazing, a canvas has a soft matte surface that can be viewed from any angle in any light. The woven texture also adds depth, especially to painterly images: the brushstrokes in a Monet or the gradients in a Hokusai woodblock look at home on a surface with grain. Our famous artist prints are chosen with this in mind.
Paper is sharpest. For very fine line work, typography or photography where every detail needs to be crisp, smooth paper behind glass renders the image most precisely. Canvas texture softens micro-detail slightly, which flatters paintings and illustrations but can be a trade-off for highly detailed photographs at small sizes.
Cost, weight and practicalities
Posters are the cheapest to buy and the most expensive to make look good, because a decent frame often costs more than the poster inside it. Framed prints concentrate the cost in the frame and glazing; a large glass-fronted frame is heavy, fragile to ship and needs a solid wall fixing. Canvas sits in between: more than a poster, often less than a comparably sized glass-framed print, and light enough that even our 90×150 cm (36"×59") size hangs from two ordinary screws.
Shipping matters more than people expect. Glass breaks; paper creases; canvas on stretcher bars is sturdy in transit, which is one reason we can offer free tracked worldwide shipping on every piece.
A quick summary of the practical side:
- Poster: lowest price, lightest, shortest life, needs a frame to look finished
- Framed print: sharpest detail, protected surface, heaviest, glare, highest price at large sizes
- Canvas: no glare, durable, light, textured surface, ready to hang out of the box
When each one is the right choice
Choose a poster when the image is temporary or playful: a child's room that will change in two years, a rented flat where you cannot drill, a concert or film poster you love for what it is. Pin it, clip it, enjoy it, replace it.
Choose a framed print when detail is everything and the piece will hang away from direct light: a fine-line illustration, a black and white photograph at a modest size, a limited-edition print you want behind glass for protection. Budget for proper glazing and a mat.
Choose canvas when the piece is large, when the room has mixed lighting, when the image is painterly or textured, or when you simply want to open the box and hang it. Canvas is also the practical answer for hallways, bedrooms and above sofas, where glass glare and weight are both nuisances. Our size and frame guide shows which of our nine sizes suits each wall.
There is also a middle path. Our rolled print option is the same canvas and the same inks, shipped without bars or frame, for people who prefer to work with a local framer. It gives you the material benefits of canvas and the freedom to choose your own glazing or mounting.
The short version
Posters are for now, framed prints are for detail, canvas is for walls you want to settle. If you are furnishing a room you plan to live in for years, start with canvas for the large pieces and add framed paper for the small, intricate ones.
