How to Hang a Canvas: Hardware, Wall Types and the 145 cm Rule
6 min de leituraNeste artigo
Hanging a canvas is a ten-minute job when you know the order of operations, and a frustrating afternoon when you do not. The good news is that stretched canvas is light compared with glass-fronted frames, and every piece we make leaves the workshop with its hanging hardware already fitted. What remains is choosing the right fixing for your wall, finding the right height and getting it level on the first attempt.
This guide covers all of that, including the one measurement most people get wrong and a few tricks for the largest sizes.
What arrives in the box
Every framed or stretched piece from our workshop ships ready to hang. Depending on the presentation style, the back carries one of two systems:
- Floating frame, wooden frame and gallery wrap: a sawtooth hanger or a pair of D-rings with hanging wire, fixed to the stretcher bars or frame. Sizes up to 40×60 cm (16"×24") typically use a single central hanger; larger pieces use two D-rings so the weight is shared and the canvas stays level.
- Hanging canvas: wooden rails top and bottom with a cord already attached to the top rail. It hangs from a single hook like a scroll.
Rolled prints arrive without bars or hardware and are meant for your own framing, so the rest of this guide applies to the four stretched styles.
We do not include wall fixings, because the right fixing depends entirely on your wall. That is the next decision.
Hooks, nails or screws: match the fixing to the wall
Stretched canvas is light. A 60×90 cm (24"×36") piece in a floating frame weighs roughly as much as a hardback book, and even our largest 90×150 cm (36"×59") size is well under what a single good screw will hold. The question is not strength but what your wall is made of.
Plasterboard or drywall
For sizes up to about 50×75 cm (20"×30"), a standard picture hook with its angled nail is sufficient and leaves only a pinprick. For larger pieces, or anywhere a door slams nearby, use a self-drilling plasterboard anchor with a screw. Avoid plain nails in drywall for anything heavy; they loosen over time.
Brick, concrete or stone
Drill with a masonry bit, insert a plastic wall plug and drive a screw, leaving about 1 cm of the screw head proud of the wall for the hanger to catch. This is the most secure fixing of all and worth the five extra minutes.
Wooden walls or studs
A wood screw driven straight in is all you need. If you can locate a stud behind drywall, a screw into the stud beats any anchor.
Rented homes
Adhesive picture-hanging strips work for small and medium sizes on smooth, painted walls. Follow the weight rating on the pack, press firmly, and wait an hour before hanging. For anything above 60×90 cm we still recommend a proper hook.
The 145 cm centre rule
Galleries hang art so that the centre of the piece sits at about 145 cm (57 inches) from the floor, which is average eye level for a standing adult.
To use it, you need two measurements from your canvas: its total height, and the distance from the top edge to the hanger when the wire or sawtooth is pulled taut. Then:
- Start at 145 cm from the floor. Mark it lightly in pencil.
- Add half the canvas height. For a 60×90 cm portrait piece, add 45 cm to reach 190 cm, which is where the top edge will sit.
- Subtract the hanger drop, the distance from the top edge down to the taut hanging point. If that is 8 cm, your hook goes at 182 cm.
- Drill or nail at that mark.
Two exceptions. Above a sofa, bed or sideboard, let the furniture decide: leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the canvas, even if that pushes the centre a little higher. And in a room where people are mostly seated, such as a dining room, drop the centre 5 to 10 cm lower. If you are still deciding on dimensions, our size and frame guide shows how each size relates to common furniture.
Getting it level
With a single central hanger, the canvas pivots freely and finds its own level; nudge a corner and it stays. With two D-rings, the two hooks must be at exactly the same height, which is where most crooked pictures come from.
- Measure the distance between the D-rings on the back, then mark both hook positions on the wall using a spirit level or a level app on your phone across the two marks.
- Alternatively, use a single hook and a wire strung between the D-rings. The wire self-levels and forgives a few millimetres of error.
- Once hung, stick a small felt pad or a blob of removable adhesive putty on each lower back corner. It stops the canvas drifting when a door slams and keeps the frame off the wall paint.
Large sizes: make it a two-person job
From 70×100 cm (28"×40") upward, the challenge is not weight but reach and visibility. One person cannot see the hanger and the hook at the same time. A few tips:
- Fix both hooks first and check them with a level before the canvas comes anywhere near the wall.
- One person lifts the canvas by the sides of the frame, never by the top bar alone, while the other stands back and guides them onto the hooks. Say "left, up, down" rather than pointing.
- For the 90×150 cm size, use two anchored screws rather than picture hooks, and consider mounting a short horizontal batten if the wall is uneven.
- Protect the canvas face. Lean it against a wall on a folded blanket while you work, face inward, and never set it down on its corner.
Final checks and a quick recap
Step back to the doorway and look again. The centre should be at eye height, the gap to any furniture should feel comfortable, and the frame should sit flush. If something is off by a centimetre, a second picture hook is cheaper than living with it.
In short: identify your wall type, choose the matching fixing, place the centre at 145 cm, level two-hook pieces with a spirit level, and bring a friend for anything above 70×100 cm. If you have a question about the hardware on a specific piece, our contact page reaches the workshop directly, and we are happy to send a photo of the back before you order.
