Floating Frame vs Gallery Wrap vs Wooden Frame: Which One Suits Your Home?
5 min di letturaIn questo articolo
Choosing the artwork is the fun part. Choosing how it is finished is where most people hesitate, and it matters more than it seems: the same canvas can read as gallery-modern, warmly classic or casually bohemian depending on the frame. We offer five presentation styles, all built in our own workshop, and this guide explains what each one is, where it works, and which frame colour tends to suit which interior.
The five styles at a glance
- Floating frame – the canvas sits inside a slim wooden frame with a small shadow gap around it, so the artwork appears to float. The most popular choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
- Wooden frame – a classic solid frame that sits flush against the canvas edge. Warmer and more traditional than the floating frame.
- Gallery wrap – the canvas is stretched around kiln-dried pine bars and stapled at the back; the image or a solid colour continues around the edges. No frame at all.
- Hanging canvas – the canvas hangs from a wooden rail at the top with a matching rail at the bottom, like a scroll. Light and relaxed.
- Rolled print – the printed canvas only, shipped in a tube, for people who want to frame locally or stretch it themselves.
Each style in detail
Floating frame: the modern default
If you are unsure, start here. The shadow gap between canvas and frame creates a thin line of depth that makes the artwork feel finished without boxing it in. It works with almost every style of art, from Hokusai's waves to bold abstract colour fields, and it photographs beautifully, which is why you see it in most interior magazines.
Best for: living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, offices; anywhere you want the piece to look intentional. It is also the style we recommend when you are hanging two or three pieces together, because the consistent slim frame line ties the group together.
Wooden frame: classic and warm
The solid wooden frame has no gap; it hugs the canvas like a traditional painting frame. It brings more wood into view, so it has a stronger presence than the floating frame and suits interiors with natural materials, older architecture, or a cosy, layered feel.
Best for: impressionist and fine-art reproductions such as Monet or Van Gogh, vintage posters, botanical plates, and any room where you already have wooden furniture you want the frame to echo. In a very minimal white interior it can feel slightly heavy; there, choose the floating frame instead.
Gallery wrap: clean and frameless
A gallery wrap is the purest form of a canvas print: just the image, stretched tight over a 2–4 cm deep pine frame you never see. Without a frame edge, the artwork merges with the wall and the room feels calmer. It is also the lightest of the stretched options and the easiest to hang.
Best for: large statement pieces where a frame would add unnecessary visual weight, photography and landscapes with sky or sea that can continue around the edges, children's rooms, and modern loft-style spaces. Avoid it for artworks with important detail right at the edges, since the wrap uses roughly 2–4 cm of the image on each side.
Hanging canvas: relaxed and easy to move
The hanging canvas replaces stretcher bars with two slim wooden rails, top and bottom. The canvas hangs freely, which gives it a soft, slightly handmade look. It weighs very little, needs just one nail, and is simple to move when you rearrange a room.
Best for: bohemian and Japandi interiors, rental homes where you want minimal wall damage, kitchens and hallways, and Japanese woodblock prints, which were historically displayed as scrolls. It suits portrait orientation particularly well.
Rolled print: for the DIY framer
The rolled print is the printed 380 gsm canvas on its own, with a white margin for stretching, delivered in a sturdy tube. Choose it when you already have a frame, when you work with a local framer, or when shipping a large stretched canvas to your location would be impractical. Note that a rolled print arrives without hanging hardware, so it is the only option that is not ready to hang out of the box.
Which frame colour for which interior?
Floating and wooden frames come in oak, walnut, black, white and gold. A simple way to decide:
- Oak – Scandinavian, Japandi and light-wood interiors. Blends in; lets the artwork lead.
- Walnut – mid-century modern, dark wood floors, leather and brass. Adds warmth without the weight of black.
- Black – modern, industrial and monochrome interiors; also the strongest choice for black and white photography and line art. Makes a borderline-small piece feel more substantial.
- White – coastal, bright and airy rooms, white or pale walls, nurseries. Frames the art without competing with it.
- Gold – classic, eclectic and art-deco rooms; superb with Klimt, Mucha and other richly coloured fine-art reproductions.
A reliable rule: match the frame to the dominant wood or metal already in the room, or pick a frame colour that appears somewhere in the artwork itself. When in doubt, oak and black are the two colours that almost never look wrong.
Making the decision
Ask yourself three questions. Is the room modern or classic? Floating frame for modern, wooden frame for classic. Do you want the art to blend in or stand out? Gallery wrap to blend, framed to stand out. Will you move or rearrange often? Hanging canvas or rolled print. Whatever you choose, every stretched option leaves our workshop with hanging hardware already installed, made to order in 1–3 business days.
You can compare all five styles side by side, in every frame colour, in our size and frame guide, and see how other customers have finished their favourites in our best sellers collection.
