Botanical and Floral Prints: A Room-by-Room Styling Guide
6 min di letturaIn questo articolo
Botanical and floral prints are the easiest way to bring a sense of life into a room without adding a single houseplant to water. They soften hard edges, warm up neutral palettes and work in almost any home, from a city flat to a country kitchen. The trick is choosing the right type, the right size and the right frame for the room you have.
This guide walks through the two main families of botanical art, where each one works best, how to frame it and how to build a set that looks intentional rather than accidental.
Vintage botanicals vs modern florals: what is the difference?
Vintage botanicals come from the tradition of scientific illustration. Think of a single fern, a cross-section of a seed pod or a labelled orchid drawn with careful lines on a cream or aged-paper background. They are quiet, precise and slightly scholarly. Because most of the original plates are well over a century old, this style sits comfortably in the public domain and feels timeless rather than trendy.
Modern florals are looser and bolder. They include oversized blooms painted in loose brushstrokes, graphic silhouettes of leaves, abstract petal shapes and photographic close-ups where a single flower fills the whole canvas. Colour does the heavy lifting here: a deep burgundy peony or a sun-yellow sunflower becomes the focal point of the wall.
A simple way to decide: if your room already has a lot going on, a vintage botanical adds detail without noise. If the room feels flat and needs a focal point, a modern floral gives you one in a single piece.
Room by room: where botanicals work best
Living room. This is where modern florals shine. A single large piece above the sofa, around 70×100 cm (28"×40") or 80×110 cm (32"×43"), anchors the seating area. Pick one dominant colour from the artwork and echo it in a cushion or throw.
Bedroom. Keep it calm. Muted botanicals in sage, dusty pink or sepia tones suit the space. A pair of portrait prints hung either side of the bed, or one landscape piece above the headboard, both work well. Browse our bedroom wall art for ideas that lean soft.
Kitchen and dining. Herb and vegetable illustrations are a natural fit here. Vintage plates of rosemary, artichoke or citrus feel at home near a dining table, and the aged-paper tones pair nicely with wood. Smaller sizes such as 30×45 cm (12"×18") suit a narrow wall between cabinets.
Bathroom. Ferns, palms and other leafy greens suit the humid, spa-like feel of a bathroom. Canvas tolerates steam far better than paper behind glass, which tends to ripple. A single 40×60 cm (16"×24") piece above the towel rail is usually enough.
Hallway and entry. A vertical run of three small botanicals along a corridor gives the eye something to follow and makes a narrow space feel considered.
Choosing a frame for floral and botanical art
The frame changes the mood of the same image more than most people expect. Here is how our five presentation styles behave with botanical subjects:
- Oak floating frame – the all-rounder. The slim frame with a shadow gap lets a vintage botanical breathe and adds warmth to pale walls.
- Walnut wooden frame – richer and more traditional. Lovely with sepia plates and darker florals in a study or dining room.
- Black frame – sharpens a modern floral and gives it a gallery feel. Also good for black-and-white botanical sketches.
- White frame – keeps things airy; ideal in a bathroom or a Scandinavian-style bedroom.
- Gallery wrap – no frame at all, canvas wrapped around the bars. Best for photographic close-ups and painterly florals where the image can continue around the edge.
Gold frames deserve a mention too: a thin gold floating frame around a dark, moody floral is one of the most elegant combinations we print. For details on how each style looks in person, see our size and frame guide.
Building a set that looks intentional
Botanicals are made for grouping, but a set only works when something ties the pieces together. Choose at least two of these three elements and keep them consistent:
- Same size and frame. Three 30×45 cm (12"×18") prints in matching oak frames will look coherent even if the subjects differ.
- Same style. All vintage plates, or all loose modern florals. Mixing the two in one grid rarely works.
- Same palette. Three green ferns, or three pink and coral blooms, read as a family at a glance.
Hang grouped pieces with a gap of 5–8 cm (2–3") between them. For a pair above a sofa, align the bottom edges. For a column in a hallway, align the centres. If you are buying several pieces at once, our multi-piece discount applies automatically at checkout.
Orientation and scale: small mistakes that make a big difference
Most of our botanical and floral artworks are available in portrait, landscape and square orientation. Match the orientation to the wall, not the other way around: a tall, narrow wall wants portrait, a wide stretch above furniture wants landscape, and a square piece suits a spot between two windows or above a small console.
On scale, the most common regret is going too small. A single botanical above a sofa should span roughly two thirds of the furniture width. A 20×30 cm (8"×12") print is lovely on a shelf or in a tight corner, but it will disappear on a large open wall. When in doubt, go one size up, or make up the width with a pair.
A quick plan to get started
Pick the room first, then the mood: quiet detail (vintage botanical) or a confident focal point (modern floral). Choose a size that fills about two thirds of the wall space or furniture below it, then a frame that matches your existing wood tones or trim. If you want a set, keep size, style or palette consistent.
Every piece is printed on 380 gsm poly-cotton artist canvas with archival pigment inks, stretched over kiln-dried pine bars and shipped with hanging hardware already fitted, so it is ready for the wall the day it arrives.
