Art Above the Sofa: Sizing, Height and Single vs Pair vs Triptych
6 min de lectureDans cet article
The wall above the sofa is where most of us hang our first serious piece of art, and it is also where most sizing and placement mistakes happen. Too high, too small, or three mismatched frames drifting apart: we have all seen it. The fix is not complicated. Three numbers and one decision will get you a wall that looks like it was planned by someone who knew what they were doing.
Three numbers to get right
Number one: the height
Galleries hang artwork so that its centre sits at about 145–150 cm (57–60 in) from the floor, which is average eye level for a standing adult. That rule works in living rooms too, with one adjustment: above a sofa, the bottom edge of the artwork should also sit 15–25 cm (6–10 in) above the back of the sofa. If the two rules disagree, follow the sofa. Art that floats half a metre above the backrest looks disconnected, no matter how good it is.
For a standard sofa with a back height of 85–90 cm, that puts the bottom of the canvas at roughly 100–115 cm from the floor. For a low modern sofa, hang a little lower than eye level rather than leaving a gap. Rooms where people mostly sit (which is most living rooms) can take artwork 5 cm lower than the gallery rule, and it will feel more comfortable.
Number two: the width
Measure your sofa from arm to arm. The artwork, or the whole group if you hang several pieces, should be 60–75% of that width. Narrower and the piece looks lost; wider and it overpowers the furniture.
- Two-seater, about 160 cm (63 in): aim for 95–120 cm. A single 90×120 cm landscape canvas, or two 50×75 cm portraits side by side.
- Three-seater, about 210–230 cm (83–90 in): aim for 130–170 cm. A single 90×150 cm panoramic, or a pair of 60×90 cm pieces.
- Sectional or four-seater, 260 cm+ (102 in+): aim for 160–195 cm. A triptych of three 60×90 cm canvases, or one 90×150 cm with a pair of smaller pieces flanking it.
If your ideal width falls between two of our sizes, go larger. Our size and frame guide shows every size against a 220 cm sofa so you can judge the proportions before you order.
Number three: the spacing
When you hang more than one piece, the gap between them decides whether they read as one composition or as separate objects. Keep the gap at 5–8 cm (2–3 in) for pieces in the same size and frame. Larger gaps are fine for deliberately mismatched gallery walls, but above a sofa a tight, even gap almost always looks better. Align the centres of the pieces horizontally, not the top or bottom edges, unless they are identical in size.
Single, pair or triptych?
This is the one real decision, and it depends on the artwork as much as on the wall.
A single large canvas
The calmest option and the easiest to hang. One image, one frame, one nail. It suits bold artworks with a clear focal point: a Hokusai wave, a Monet water-lily pond, an abstract with one strong shape. Choose this when the room already has pattern elsewhere (rugs, cushions, bookshelves) and the wall needs to be the quiet anchor. Best sizes above a three-seater: 90×120 cm or 90×150 cm in landscape.
A pair
Two pieces of the same size, same frame, hung side by side, create rhythm without clutter. Pairs work well with artworks that belong to a series, for example two botanical studies, two black and white cityscapes, or two abstracts in the same palette. They also solve a practical problem: two medium canvases are easier to carry upstairs and to re-hang than one very large one. For a 220 cm sofa, two 60×90 cm portraits with a 6 cm gap give a total width of 126 cm, right in the target range.
A triptych
Three pieces give the most presence and are the natural choice for long sofas and sectionals. There are two ways to do it: three related but different artworks in identical frames, or one wide image split across three canvases. The second option is dramatic but less forgiving; it needs precise spacing and level hanging, or the image looks broken. Three 50×75 cm portraits with 6 cm gaps give a total width of 162 cm; three 60×90 cm pieces give 192 cm, right for a large sectional.
Frame choices above a sofa
Because the sofa is already a large block of colour and texture, keep the frame simple. A floating frame in oak or black is the safe choice for most living rooms. A gallery wrap works when you want the artwork to merge with the wall and let the sofa take centre stage. If the sofa is dark leather, white or oak frames lift the wall; if it is a pale fabric sofa, walnut or black frames give the composition weight. Avoid gold unless the room is already leaning classic.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hanging the art centred on the wall instead of centred on the sofa. If the sofa is off-centre, the art should follow the sofa.
- Hanging a small piece on its own because it was already owned. Group it with others or move it to a smaller wall.
- Choosing portrait orientation for a wide wall. Landscape and panoramic sizes exist for exactly this situation.
- Eyeballing the spacing in a pair or triptych. Use a tape measure and a level, and tape paper templates first.
Putting it together
Measure the sofa, multiply by 0.6 and 0.75 to get your width range, decide between one, two or three pieces, and hang so the bottom edge sits a hand-span above the backrest. That is the whole method. Every canvas we make ships with hanging hardware installed, so once you have marked the wall the actual hanging takes minutes.
If you are looking for pieces that work in pairs and triptychs, our abstract wall art and landscape collections include many series designed to hang together. Our multi-piece discount applies automatically at checkout when you order two or more.
